Add 3 days of land experiences
Each year, from July to September, the waters around Isla de la Plata host the world’s largest known aggregation of oceanic manta rays.
These gentle giants, reaching up to 8 meters (26 feet) in wingspan, gather in this unique corner of the equatorial Pacific, making the island a sanctuary for conservation and a natural laboratory for science. It is here, in fact, where the largest oceanic mantas ever recorded have been measured.
Tour Details
Guided by experts who combine the highest safety standards with a profound respect for marine life, this experience is designed for divers seeking more than adventure, a genuine connection with the ocean. Encounters here are unlike anywhere else: mantas are curious, social, and often interact with divers. Diving with giant manta rays is more than an adventure, it’s a transformative experience.
This tour includes five full days of diving, with two dives per day in small groups of up to 8 guests, ensuring a personalized and respectful experience. On the way to the island, you may also witness the acrobatic displays of humpback whales migrating through the area. Comfortable accommodations in double rooms are included, with the option to book a single room if preferred. Ground transportation from Guayaquil to Puerto López is also provided.
Extended Tour Option
For those looking beyond diving, our extended tour adds three extra days for a deeper connection with the region’s natural and cultural treasures. You’ll explore two contrasting ecosystems on guided hikes: the dry tropical forest of Isla de la Plata, home to blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and other seabirds, and the lush tropical forest of Bola de Oro, where howler monkeys, orchids, and colorful birds abound.
You’ll also visit Los Frailes, a pristine white-sand beach with turquoise waters, ideal for relaxation and reconnection with nature. In Agua Blanca, an ancestral community, you’ll discover archaeological treasures, forest trails, and a sulfur lagoon perfect for deep unwinding. To complete the journey, you’ll have the chance to learn about conservation initiatives supported by Exploramar Diving, and even take an active role in protecting our oceans.
Itinerary
Upon arrival at José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, a member of our team will be waiting to welcome you and provide a comfortable transfer to your hotel.
In the morning, we’ll set off on a scenic drive in a private vehicle toward Puerto López, a charming coastal town that will be our home for the next six days. After settling into the hotel, we’ll enjoy a welcome lunch with the Exploramar Diving team. In the afternoon, we’ll hold an introductory briefing and fit your dive gear to get everything ready for the adventure ahead.
Each day, we’ll board our boat and head to the stunning Isla de la Plata, renowned for hosting the world’s largest known aggregation of giant manta rays. The boat ride takes about an hour, and along the way, we may spot humpback whales. We’ll do two dives per day in search of these majestic creatures and the vibrant marine life that surrounds them.
After five unforgettable days exploring the underwater world, it’s time to say goodbye. After breakfast, private transportation will take you back to the airport or to your chosen destination in Guayaquil.
After breakfast, we will head into the lush Bola de Oro Trail, a hidden tropical rainforest in the hills near Puerto López. We will hike among towering trees in search of howler monkeys and forest birds. Back in Puerto López, we will visit a local community to learn about the conservation projects supported by Exploramar Diving and share in experiences that connect nature and community.
In the morning, we’ll relax at los Frailes Beach, one of Ecuador’s most beautiful beaches, with white sand, turquoise waters, and a pristine natural setting. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the ancestral community of Agua Blanca, located in the heart of Machalilla National Park, where we will explore its pre-Columbian history, walk through dry forest trails, and even take a dip in its sulfur lagoon, known for its therapeutic properties.
The journey to Isla de la Plata offers a unique chance to spot humpback whales along the way. Once ashore, a guided hike will take us through the island’s dry tropical forest, where blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and other seabirds nest. To finish the day, we will snorkel around the island’s reefs and discover its vibrant marine life.
